Alternative Methods of Healing That Help You Physically and Mentally

While I have been focusing my writing on my other blog, Luminous Blue, about the healing journey I’ve been on through my daughter’s illness and transition from cancer, I am delighted to welcome back guest blogger Marcela De Vivo.  Today she writes about the benefits of alternative methods for healing mind, body and spirit, including Reiki, aromatherapy, yoga, meditation and nutrition.

Alternative Methods of Healing That Help You Physically and Mentally

While traditional medicine does have its place in terms of health care, real healing often takes place outside of a doctor’s office. Whether you have a physical ailment or a mental block, or a combination of both, prescription drugs, people in white coats, and a dizzying array of tests often don’t provide the healing you seek.

Healing, within and without, requires more than modern medicine can provide. Often people recover from a major illness, but suffer psychologically after the trauma of the experience. Whole body healing requires time, good health care, and occasionally, alternative methods of healing.

The methods suggested below have demonstrated some healing benefit, regardless of the physical or mental complaint. If you find that your doctor’s care, while good, is incomplete, consider trying some of the alternative options to support your current healing practices.

Reiki. Reiki is often lumped in with other forms of body work like massage therapy. However, Reiki involves very little physical touching, if any at all, and you remained fully clothed throughout the session. It induces deep relaxation through the help of a Reiki practitioner, who will help channel life force healing energy to aid in your healing by holding their hands over specific positions over the body, and treats the whole body, mind, and spirit. If you have a particular area of weakness, the Reiki practitioner may spend more time channeling Universal Reiki Energy into that area. Reiki has seen some success with treating Post-Traumatic Stress syndrome in soldiers.

Aromatherapy. Linked with increased feelings of relaxation and well-being, essential oils aromatherapy is an easy and inexpensive way to immediately improve your mood. Certain oils like chamomile and lavender are associated with stress relief, going so far as to slow down brain waves. Grapefruit is considered an uplifting scent, and can help improve anxiety and depression. Peppermint, tea tree, and eucalyptus are antiviral and antibacterial, so using these essential oils can bolster your immune system in warding off illness while you’re in the process of healing.

Yoga and Meditation. While these two are separate practices, they are so inexorably linked (yoga is sometimes considered a moving meditation) that they should both be practiced for best results. Depending on the type of yoga you choose, you can improve heart health, muscle strength, while gaining clarity of mind, improved focus, and reduced levels of stress. Healing requires a lot of mental energy—yoga and meditation helps you learn to channel that energy, while also giving you a much-needed mental break. Meditation is proven to reduce stress and can be used to help your body heal itself.

Nutrition. What you eat during the healing process can have a major effect on the outcome. To ensure that your body has all the necessary nutrients in the best possible form, focus on whole, minimally processed or cooked foods. Getting plenty of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants helps boost your immune system and provides your body with the building blocks it needs to improve. Plus, what you eat can affect your mood and energy levels. Too much sugar and refined carbs and you may suffer from mood swings and energy crashes, neither of which is good for you mental well-being.

These are just a few of the alternative methods of healing that can help support your current practices, or fill in the gaps that modern medicine leaves. If you’re looking for a holistic healing experience, consider adding alternative healing options to what you’re already doing.

Out of the Blue

{This is a post from my new blogsite. See Luminous Blue if you’d like to read more of my experiences from this past year’s journey with my daughter, interwoven with Elizabeth’s memoir and poetry.}

On Friday, November 4, 2011, my world completely changed. My older daughter Elizabeth, 21 at that time, called me as I was finishing a qi gong class at home.  She was in tears, having trouble breathing and said something was wrong, she was in so much pain she was headed to the Student Health Center again.  I knew it was serious, as this girl doesn’t cry, and has a very high pain threshold. I immediately said I’d meet her there, jumped in the car and tried to center and calm myself as I drove.  As I walked in to find her, the kind doctor was telling her to go to the ER at UMC.  We asked if she could go home, drop off her car and pick up a few things, and he said yes, but not to delay.  He also called ahead and made sure she knew to tell them she was having chest pain, so she’d be seen quickly.  Apparently he had a very good idea that she had mediastinal non-Hodgkins lymphoma from looking at her, as her face and neck were quite swollen, and that a large tumor wrapped around a vein was causing the swelling. She’d been having pain in her right upper chest for weeks that another doctor had been dismissing as allergies, and treating her with prednisone.

We didn’t learn the exact diagnosis until after her biopsy on Monday. However within hours of arriving at the ER, her chest x-ray showed us a large mass in her chest, about the size of her heart, just to the right of it. It was shocking to see. Elizabeth was healthy – she’d rarely been sick, had been treated with homeopathic remedies most of her childhood, ate organic whole foods, was a vegetarian since age 14 and had been a dedicated yoga student much of her life. How could she have a mass the size of her fist in her chest? How could she have cancer?!

Our dear friend Ann Marie, Elizabeth’s doctor, came to sit with us as we waited hours for her be admitted.  I walked outside with her at some point, and started sobbing on her shoulder, “no, no, no, no, no….!” I was worried about all kinds of things, from the cost of the yet unknown treatment and her limited insurance cap, to her being able to complete her semester as a junior at the U of A, to how she would cope emotionally with the diagnosis of cancer, but I did NOT think she would die. That was not in my world of possibilities yet. I couldn’t even imagine my world without Elizabeth.

We were moved very slowly and gently into that reality, and for that I am deeply grateful. For the eleven months we had after this day, nine of them believing and trusting that she would have a full recovery and live a long, healthy life, and the last two months knowing she would die, I am grateful. Every moment was a blessing. She and I did a lifetime of healing in that time, she lived fully and richly, and in the end, she became love itself, showering us all with love, and in a state of grace that I’m blessed to have experienced in this lifetime.

Transitions and Acceptance

Dear Ones,
My older daughter, Elizabeth Blue, made her transition September 23, after a year long journey with cancer, and she did so while being showered with love and in a radiant state of grace. It is heartbreaking and we are finding moments of joy in this time of grieving.

It feels overwhelmingly sad, and when I’m present in each moment I come to a place of peace and acceptance of what is. We are truly blessed to have had this time of graceful passage with her, and for so many of our family and friends to be close by. It does feel like she is at peace, making her way in the realms of those who have recently left this earthly plain.

I will not be scheduling individual clients or classes for the time being.  I have been on hiatus while caring for my daughter, and am now taking some time for my own healing, being with friends and family, and doing some travel.  I have been writing and will be creating a new blog that will incorporate my process over the last year with my daughter, and Elizabeth Blue’s writing as well.

I will begin seeing clients again in November, starting on a part-time basis.

If you are interested in attending our Hawaii retreat, the dates are set for December 6 to 11, and promises to be a deep journey into the Hawaiian healing energies.

I send you all a radiance of love and wish for you a showering of divine grace at this time of collective and personal growth.

blessings and love,

Lucia

Heart-Centered Energy Healing

Heart-Centered Energy Healing

heart centered meditation

My daily practice for over ten years is heart-centering.  I use this as a daily ritual, which helps me to center and open, connecting with the Divine, with my inner guidance and with the heart center – where all is welcome, where the energy of the upper and lower chakras meet and there is no judgment.  I also use it when I’m in a situation where I feel off-balance, or fearful,  or where my ego/emotional self is in control, in a way that is not serving me. It always brings me back to the heart center, to a place of calm, compassionate, grace.

I love this practice because it is simple, anyone can do it, and it is very powerful and effective.

Begin by placing your right hand over your heart chakra and place your left hand over your right, with your thumbs meeting above.  See and feel your crown chakra open, at the top of your head, connecting with the divine energies of the sky, the heavens, the cosmos, the masculine…and now see and feel your root chakra open, at the base of your spine, connecting with the divine energies of the earth, the feminine/nurturing aspects.  Bring these divine energies up from the earth and down from the heavens into your body, meeting at the heart and then flowing down your arms and out your hands.  It then flows back into your heart in a beautiful circle…You can also visualize this energy flowing out your hands to others around the world, or place your hands on another person’s body to send them this healing energy.

The mantra to focus on while doing this are the four qualities of the heart center, as taught to me, and countless others by Dr. Brugh Joy:  Supernal Compassion, Innate Harmony, Healing Presence, Unconditional Love and Selfless Service.  Simply repeating these words, contemplating their truth, and bringing their essence into your being will change your experience of life.

Hopi Elders message for NOW

I’ve read this many places and it always inspires me and brings me to a new level of awareness…

A Message from the Hopi Elders for 2010

You have been telling people this is the Eleventh Hour.
Now you must go back and tell the people that this is THE Hour.
Here are the things that must be considered:
Where are you living?
What are you doing?
What are your relationships?
Are you in right relation?
Where is your water?
Know your garden.
It is time to speak your Truth.
Create your community.
Be good to each other.
And do not look outside yourself for the leader.

This could be a good time!

There is a river flowing now very fast.
It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.
They will try to hold on to the shore.
They will feel like they are being torn apart, and they will suffer greatly.

Know the river has its destination.

The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off toward the middle of
the river, keep your eyes open, and our heads above the water.

See who is here with you and celebrate.

At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally, least of all
ourselves! For the moment we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.

The time of the lonely wolf is over.
Gather yourselves!

Banish the word struggle from your attitude and vocabulary.

All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.

We are the ones we have been waiting for.

Kundalini experiences

Here is some helpful advice from Michael Milner, one of the Oneness Trainers in Florida concerning kundalini experiences and how to help move the energy through the physical body and energy bodies:

“Lee Sanella M.D., one of the pioneers of the Spiritual Emergency Network, in his book “The Kundalini Experience” explains a number of experiences he had helping people integrate kundalini awakenings. Bottom line, he found that the kundalini energy after reaching the top of the head needs to ground back down through the body (usually down the front of the body). When it reaches back down from the crown to the heart, that’s when the heart flowers according to OU teaching. When it reaches the lower belly (tantien or hara), virtually all side effects of kundalini vanish. When it reconnects with the root chakra, the serpent has completed a full circle like the ouroboros, the snake swallowing its tail, in a feedback loop, very powerful, very balanced! Taoists call this the microcosmic orbit. It keeps the kundalini circulating continuously in a full circle through all the chakras simultaneously, hence the person remains fully functional on every level of their humanity and fully grounded.

In Indian yogic traditions the kundalini is often raised up to 6th & 7th chakras and left there or somewhere above the crown chakra. This tends to leave people drooling & unable to function, with shakes, headaches, eye pain, sleep disorders, sexual disfunction, etc. Lying in shavasan will allow the energy to ground & integrate, but most Westerners do not take the 20 minutes or so required for that to be effective. In the book Vara Deeksha Mala (published by OU), Amma teaches a meditative counterpart to Chakra Dhyana called Parvathi Padma Dhyana meant to be practiced after Chakra Dhyana (for instructions see http://www.onenessmovementflorida.org/ParvathiPadmaDhyana.htm ).

Another alternative is the So-Ham mantra meditation taught occasionally by the guides at Oneness University (and taught by Yogananda & Muktananda and many other gurus). Inhale on “So” seeing the golden kundalini energy flowing up from root to crown, hold your breath briefly while you see the energy fountaining out the top of your head mingling with the Cosmic Prana, then exhale on “Ham” as it pours back down over the whole body, FEEL it coursing down through every part of your body body filling it with golden energy. Eventually, So and Ham, inhale & exhale, may merge into OM, breath ceases, and one enters the breathless state of Nirvikalpa Samadhi.

OR Taoist breathing (this has been my life-long sadhana): Tongue curled, tip touching the center of the hard palate in the roof of the mouth. Inhale feeling the energy flow up the spine through the top of the head, exhale feeling it flow down the front of the body to the lower belly (tantien = sea of elixir). I have practiced & taught this for about 40 years to many people having difficulties with kundalini, and like Dr. Sanella, I have discovered it really works to bring balance & eliminate kundalini side effects. It leads ultimately to a state in which it is entirely possible to stay in nirvikalpa samādhi and yet be fully functional in this world. This condition is known as sahājā nirvikalpa samādhi or sahājā samādhi. According to Ramana Maharshi, “Remaining in the primal, pure natural state without effort is sahaja nirvikalpa samadhi”. Taoists call it “wu wei”, the natural human state, which means “not doing” or spontaneous effortless
action, naturally doing the right thing at the right time without thought or effort.

One last thing, the nausea issue: When Kundalini energy is flooding the 3rd chakra people often feel nausea. 3rd chakra involves power & control. They feel this energy out of control and it is probably activating some blocks or charges in the 3rd chakra area. If they think “something is wrong, this needs to be fixed” & resist or struggle with it, nausea often results. If they are encouraged that nothing is wrong or needs fixing, let it be, just relax, stop fighting it, let it happen, breathe, feel it, embrace it & experience the charge (energy) without resistance, it transforms almost instantly from nausea to pure blissful energy. It’s sort of like going on a roller coaster. When you go over the top, rushes hit your tummy. Resist it and you may throw up. Surrender & you experience joyful euphoria”

presence and awareness

this is from Kip Mazuy from New Zealand…..he writes on presence and awareness.

I find it very helpful, as this process is not always an easy one, or all joyful… but if you are reading this, you are on your soul’s journey, and even if we wanted to, once we become more conscious, we can’t stop! So these words of wisdom have been soothing to my soul. enjoy.

“It is often said
that if you are present
then you are blissful.

But that is not the full truth.

If you are present
yes, most likely at first
there will be bliss,
there will be peace.

But if you remain present,
if you remain surrendered to
this moment and aware,
then awareness expands,
the Shakti expands.

It starts to push out
everything that is incongruent
with bliss.

It widens your energy channels
so that even more energy
can move through.

And the experience
cannot really be called bliss.

It is excruciating.

Not in a sense of pain
but intensity.

The ego wants it to stop
because it is pushing your awareness
beyond the boundaries of ego,
beyond what is comfortable.

And so the conflict between the ego
and the shakti creates intensity.

Like trying to stick your head
out of the window of a jet
going the speed of sound.

Many people learn
that if they surrender a little,
then they get blissful
and then they can contract back into ego.

A little expansion
a little contraction.

Nothing wrong with this.

But the longer you can
remain in the expansion,
the more expansion increases.

And this expansion
burns away the separateness.

Burns away
that which separates you
from unconditional peace and bliss.

The action of identification,
the core stress of
‘me’ and ‘mine’
that separates you from life
gets burned away in this shakti
until you realize
that this fiery consciousness
is what you are.

And that is freedom.

I say this because many people
reach a certain intensity of awareness
and then back off.

Because they heard a teacher
say that if they are present
they will be blissful.

And so they were present
but instead of bliss
there was this intensity
so they think something must be wrong.

But there is nothing wrong.
That is the process.

What is happening
here and now
is exactly as it is supposed to be.

Being present
does not guarantee
a certain experience.

But it is the doorway
to unconditional peace and bliss.
And you feel that opening immediately.

Blessings,

Kip”

sharing oneness

We are here on Moloka’i, Hawai’i, really slowing down after being here for 2 weeks now! We’ve had our first 2 conference calls with the Oneness Blessing by intent and LOVED sharing the Blessing with those of you on the calls… we plan to continue to offer Deeksha by phone when we return to Tucson, with details still to come. Of course, we will also continue to open our home every Wednesday for our Oneness Blessing gathering!

Denise suggested tonight that the participants (you!) could journal and share some of your experiences with the Blessing, and this is a perfect place to do that. You can add comments that we can all read using this as a forum. Please share images, visions, insights, revelations, any thoughts that help us to connect and induct each other into our shared experiences…

Flowering of the Heart class

We were both joyful and sad to have the 4th of our first series of our Flowering of the Heart class a little over a week ago – it was wonderful to have such a beautiful group of women join us each week for deep exploration, laughter, meditation, discovery, and more… and we have missed them and our Sunday ritual already! However, we are happy to have another 4 week series starting soon, on May 24, as we continue our deepening process…

Here are the wonderful women who joined us for the first series!
